Midrange / Hybrid Hunter - the worst Hunter matchup, they have lots of highroll opportunities with Hyena and the ability to go both wide and tall, making it less likely you'll have the right removal at the right time. I don't think most DR Hunters are teching for aggro right now, but if that changes then things look worse. If the game gets to the DK Rexxar showdown, you should lose. Win with a quick Kathrena your Stitched Trackers are more consistent than theirs. Try to win before Zuljin happens.ĭR Hunter - This should be slightly favored, you can counter early Devilsaurs with Freezing Trap and they don't have a good response to Spellstone unless they manage to Cube a Grizzly - don't let that happen. Fight for board until you windmill slam a Kathrena. Spell Hunter, Secret Hunter - Grizzly makes these favorable matchups I think, since you can blunt their spellstones but they can't blunt yours, and you have Kathrena. Don't worry about keeping Flare, it's mostly in the deck for the card draw, and by pitching it back you draw a new card anyway - it's like you cast it for free! You don't usually want to keep Witchwood Grizzly but it's a great draw or Discover. Games will be decided by who curves out the best and who has the best/most Spellstones. It also reveals stealth, not like I'd ever throw a game by forgetting about that, right?Īgainst Hunters you want to mulligan proactively. That said, it likely wouldn't be worth including without Hunter in the meta. Generally, I think the list should run 5 beasts for optimal Kathrena value, and I think War Bear has less downside than Charged Devilsaur.įlare is in the deck as much for cycling as for Secret tech. I like making my Stitched Trackers as consistent as possible, but Shaw certainly has upsides. Replaced it with 1x Kill Command recently and I haven't decided if it's better or not. Houndmaster Shaw - I tried it, the card's decent. I think Secret Plan is better because it effectively is any tech secret. I run Secret Plan instead of the tech secret that's in most lists (Snipe or Rat Trap). That said, I expect Zuljin would find a way into the most optimal list. I'm not sure it's necessary, and the deck does like to play its Trackings instead of holding them in hand. I haven't tested it because I don't have the card.
In the matchup advice below, you're going to see a lot of "play Kathrena and win".įirst, I don't run Zuljin. Kathrena into Oondasta into Krush is 21/21 spread across 3 bodies without even counting the Deathrattle - and you can set up for this using Stitched Tracker, so it's not astronomically improbable. Kathrena might be the strongest single-card win condition in the game. And Stitched Tracker is very good with both Kathrena and Oondasta. The reason Spell Hunter is good is because it capitalizes the best on Spellstone, not because of the no-minion cards.Ĭards we gain: Obviously, Kathrena is the big one here. TMS is a good way to push damage after a spellstone, but it's not great on its own. In my opinion, these are all fairly small losses. We also cut one Secret Plan, so the spellstone is slightly weaker on average. Spell Hunter is a familiar deck to all, so I'll be discussing what cards we gain and what we lose by running Kathrena.Ĭards we lose: To My Side and Rhok'delar must be cut, and the deck doesn't have enough room to run all the removal. My favorite thing about the deck is how it doesn't have to run any bad cards. Kathrena gives you a plan against control besides "Rexxar and pray". Witchwood Grizzly is a good Spellstone counter, and a good aggro counter generally. In terms of how it fits into the meta, Kathrena Hunter is more well-rounded against the field and also functions as an anti-Hunter Hunter deck. There's rarely a game that feels hopeless, and the deck isn't too high-rolly because of all the card draw effects. With Stitched Tracker and DK Rexxar, it has decent staying power.

It would be some hyperbole to call Kathrena an 8-mana "win the game", but in many games that's what it amounts to.īetween Spellstone on 5 and Kathrena on 8, the deck has an incredible series of power turns in the midgame.
Well, Kathrena is a pretty large and unpredictable threat. I've played Spell Hunter since KNC and the weakness of the deck is that against Control, your threats are limited and predictable unless you play DK Rexxar.

In my opinion, this is a massive upgrade to the deck. It takes Spell Hunter and replaces the no-minion cards with a Kathrena package.
